Gorges de l’Ardèche
35 minutes from our hotel
The Gorges de l’Ardèche and the Pont d’Arc make up one of the most remarkable natural sites in Europe.
By car, the panoramic road from the Gorges de l’Ardèche (classed as a National Nature Reserve since 1980) stretches from Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche (35 minutes from the hotel) to Pont d’Arc. There are 11 belvederes across 29 km, providing absolutely stunning panoramas over this spectacular site. Just the view over the Pont d’Arc will take your breath away. Yet at Le Serre de Tourre, the final belvedere coming from Saint-Martin, you’ll really be amazed. Perched 200 m above the river, high above the steep cliffs, its beauty is completely breathtaking.
During this adventure, you can visit Chauvet Cave 2, an exact replica of the famous Chauvet Cave in the Ardèche. As you wander into this cave at Vallon Pont d’Arc, amid stalagmites and stalactites, you’ll discover the world of men and women 36,000 years ago.
In this game of light and shadow, the walls seem to come alive with its many paintings. Hundreds of animals, with fifteen species in all, appear. Painted in red ochre, engraved with flint, traced by finger or with charcoal, the bestiary comes alive through the masterful use of shading and perspective.
Over the course of an hour, you’ll wander down a passage dotted with ten viewing points and discover the grotto's 27 murals.
Your visit ends with the grand fresco of lions, a 12 metre-long gallery depicting 92 animals in movement.
